are you kind?

I always thought I was a kind person. I genuinely care about other people and really really try to watch what I say to try and not offend anyone. I volunteer at the local womens mission and the humane society and my church. Then I realized I can also be very unkind. Getting mad at the little old lady driving slow, yelling at my daughters when they get on my nerves, flipping myself off in the mirror when I try on clothes.

Well this past tuesday at my apples of gold meeting, kindness was our discusison. We were asked to give examples of acts of kindness that we had done RECENTLY and it was actually hard for me to think of anything! I was absolutely appalled! I guess there were little things that I had done but not anything that I felt worth mentioning. I could hardly even give what my definition of kindness would be!

Anyways it got me thinking. Wow! I really need to step it up! These women that are part of this group are SO amazing! They really reminded me how GREAT it feels to be kind and give without even thinking about it. I want that! I want to be a kinder more compassionate person.

And I want you to be too!

Tell me your definition of kindness and what acts of kindness have you comitted lately?

i think you are very kind. your supportive blog comments always brighten my day. little stuff like that makes all the difference in the world!
but yes i too yell at geriatric drivers, become snippy when i get home and the bf has not done his 5 days worth of dishes piled up in the sink & can be generally ornery sometimes.
work. in. progress. ugh :)

You know, Jessica, I think it's only the people who are truly kind who care enough to think about what it means...

Does that qualify for my kindness of the day???

Seriously, it's something I have to work on, too.

Kindness begins with oneself, I think. Particularly when faced with a difficult situation. If you handle yourself and the situation with grace, you have been kind to yourself and to others around you.

And really, isn't it time we were a little kinder to ourselves? Because then, it would extend to others as well...

Great idea for a post...love to think about stuff like this!

when i think of kindness i think of "it's better to give than to receive." i often feel like a big fat kindness failure.

I actually feel BAD when I tell someone something kind I've done. It makes me think of the verse in the Bible that talks about not letting your left hand know what the right hand is doing. I don't like to share them. I try to be kind to everyone I meet, smile at people, help a harried mom put her groceries in the car, reach something for an older person who can't reach in the grocery store, etc, but then there are those times when I LOSE it! I'm HORRID to my kids, palin rude to the driver who cuts me off, and snappy at Joe.

By the way...LOVE the "flip myslef off in the mirror when I try on clothes" one!!!! HAHAHAHAHA! I laugh because I do something similar!

It certainly isn't always easy to be kind! I went through many years of feeling anger towards my children (before I became a "zen mama". Please come read chapter two of book on the latest post. It's about anger!
Thanks for vising me a few weeks ago!

I came over from the UBP 2010..but when I read this post, I had to respond. So often, we don't see the kindness that we do. I had one of my teens in our youth ministry come up to me today stating that he is not kind. I have seen him on numerous occasion run after a homeless person to give him something to eat! Anyway, 19 months ago, a dear friend of ours lost their son, almost 13. They have started a "kindness" ministry. It rewards children for random acts of kindness. You can read more about it at www.joshstevensfoundation.org

Wow! I was thinking the same thing about myself today! I get so mad at people when I am driving and I can be short with people for no reason. The flipping yourself off in the mirror cracked me up though- I have never thought of doing that but now that you mention it, I feel like that just about every time I try something on! We aren't perfect but God can help us be better :)
